Behind The Scenes -- The Making of Angel's Bay

Welcome to Angel's Bay ... a fictional town on the central California coast.  To help you better envision Angel's Bay and its wildly beautiful location, I'm posting some photos I took on a recent drive down the coast.  My husband and I took Highway 1 south from San Francisco to Los Angeles. This highway winds along the coastline, and the hairpin curves sometimes take you to the very edge of cliffs that drop abruptly down to the sea.  Fortunately, my husband kept his eye on the road while I snapped pictures.

History and Legends of Angel's Bay

A hundred and fifty years ago a ship named the Gabriella left San Francisco filled with Gold Rush spoils and treasure hunters eager to return home.  Halfway down the coast, the ship ran into a terrible storm and splintered apart.  Twenty-four survivors made it to shore.  They settled by the bay where some of their loved ones had perished.  The town was named Angel's Bay in honor of those who had lost their lives.

After the wreck, rumors abounded as to what had transpired aboard the ship, with contradicting stories of both heroism and murder.  Those legends continue to be passed down today, especially tales of angels and other spirits haunting the bay.  The shipwreck has never been discovered and many believe that the ship sank into one of the cavernous canyons under the sea that are known to be present off the central coast.

As the series begins, angel sightings increase and odd items from the Gabriella  wash ashore.  Current residents find unexpected ties to the old wreck as the past and the present are inescapably intertwined.

Quilting

In addition to legends, Angel's Bay is also known for its infamous quilts.  The tradition began after the wreck when the twenty-four survivors, led by Rosalyn Murray, made a quilt with each square telling a personal story. The survivors found healing and created a community through their quilting.  In SUDDENLY ONE SUMMER, the quilt square ties into an orphaned baby, named Gabriella, who was adopted by the town when her parents perished.  In fact, it's believed that angels rescued the child from the sea, leaving a mark on the child's heel in the form of an angel's wing.  Interestingly enough, some of the descendants from that baby bear the same birthmark.  The angel's wing and material from the baby's clothes are the centerpiece of the Angel's Bay quilt.

Each book in the series ties into one of the squares in the quilt, and I've been having a great time creating them in my mind.  I hope one day to find a quilter who might help me make them into a real quilt.  I began taking quilting classes when I started the series, and I've fallen in love with the craft but am still very much a beginner.

In the books, the Angel's Bay Quilt Shop is the emotional heart of the town and quilting night brings old and new residents together as they make and create quilts that are sold locally and worldwide.  Every new child born in town gets a quilt, and lately the quilters have been very busy ...
